Landlords ‘have no need to fear fee ban’

The Tenant Fees Act was passed last month, meaning that from 1 June this year many of the fees which tenants had to pay in the past will be illegal.

The legislation will apply to all new and renewed tenancies; existing tenancies will come under the scope of the new ban from 1 June 2020. Simon Kendall, director of Richard Kendall Estate Agent, which has six offices in the Wakefield and Pontefract area, says the move is good news for tenants – and the costs won’t be passed on to landlords renting their properties through the family-run firm.

“Generally speaking, we see it as a good thing if it makes it more affordable for tenants to rent our houses; that can only be a good thing in the long term,” he says. “At Richard Kendall, we act for our landlords, but we also have a duty of care to our tenants as well. The service that we offer won’t drop as a result, we will continue to strive to offer a fantastic service for our landlords, including looking after their tenants.”
